Writing our own personal vows for our wedding was always something that I’ve always believed in. A vow is about your promise to your partner. A promise that you should not feel obligated to make, but that you should want to make. A vow should be a sacred promise that is unbreakable. It should be from the heart.
So I didn’t want something that had been scripted by the ages, a few lines that are recited along with countless others as tradition had dictated over the centuries. I wanted it to be our words.
We wrote our vows totally separately. I completed mine first and I told Erica that I did not want her to read mine until she had completed hers, and then we can read each others together. I didn’t want what she read in mine to influence what she wrote for hers in any way, and vice versa.
I tried to keep mine as short as possible but it was quite tough. Mine was actually a whole paragraph longer but I decided to cut it out for fear of the whole thing going too long. And I also didn’t want it to be too much longer than Ericas. And so here they are. A promise for a lifetime. A promise eternal.
Erica, when I look at you, I see the woman whom I’ve spent my life dreaming about. The one whom graces my dreams of the future, forever, and ever after. I see someone whom has made me feel that her sole purpose in being here, is to make that dream come true. I have many dreams that are all but smoke in the wind. And sometimes when I wake up, I think that this is but just one of them. But then I feel your gentle touch upon my skin, and see that loving smile upon your face. And there is no measure to the joy, happiness, and pride that I feel every time I look at you Erica. My dream…. my dream that has become reality.
I pledge my life to you Erica. I give myself unto you unconditionally, uncompromisingly, and absolutely. Thank you for all the moments you’ve shared with me that will soon be but a fraction of the lifetime of moments that we have yet to share.
My heart is beating with happiness and bursting with joy as I look at you standing before me now. Knowing that these are the last few breaths that I will ever take as half a man whom has spent his life searching. From here on and for time unending, we will be as one. I will finally be complete, I will finally be whole. You complete me and I cannot wait to marry you. For you to share my name, my heart, my life. I am and will always be forever yours. Erica, I love you and I always will, from now to eternity. For you are the keeper of my heart, the light of my life, my best friend, my soul mate…. my wife.
Merrill, we started out as friends, building a strong foundation on which to build a life-long relationship. It wasn’t easy in the beginning but we’ve managed to overcome all the obstacles in our way and now we have happily taken the next step in our journey together.
You are the one that I have been searching for, the one that completes me. I have never felt this way about anyone else before. Being with you fills my soul with passion and makes my heart sing with joy. You have shown me what true love feels like and for that I thank you. Thank you for always being there for me, for loving me unconditionally and making me the happiest woman on earth. You are everything I need and at this moment seeing you standing in front of me, I know that all of my prayers have been answered and that all of my dreams have come true.
I promise you that from this day onwards, you shall never have to walk alone again. I vow to love you, cherish you, support you, and to devote all that I am to you through the uncertainties of the future. As I have given you my hand to hold, I give you my life to keep.
I love you Merrill, with all my heart and will always remain faithfully yours, now and forever.
